15.14 Does the Air Handling Unit (AHU) maintain a comfortable temperature and is there recorded evidence of regular maintenance and cleaning of AHU available?
Certain forms of bacteria flourish in a ship’s air conditioning system. These organisms or bacteria grow or multiply in stagnant water or moist slime or sludge formations. If these germs are not eliminated, they impact negatively on the ship’s living conditions, making them dangerous for the crew. The primary hazard areas are the air input systems, filter, cooler unit (dehumidifier), humidifier, and plenum insulation. The system should be inspected and cleaned on a regular basis not exceeding three months. 上記では居住区空調設備（AHU: Air Handling Unit）の衛生管理と保守管理が求められていますが、もともとはSIRE検船の要求事項を引用したものと思われます。
検船では以下のことが確認されます。
１．AHUが適切な室温を維持しているか
・船内居住区（居室、食堂、事務室など）が快適な温度になっているか
・クルーから空調不良の苦情がないか
・冷房・暖房機能が正常に作動しているか
２．AHUの定期メンテナンス記録があるか
・PMS（Planned Maintenance System）
・Maintenance Record
・Work Order
・Job History
３．AHUの内部清掃が定期的に行われているか
特に重視される箇所
・Air Intake
・Filter
・Cooling Coil
・Drain Pan
・Humidifier
・Plenum Chamber
・Insulation
そして、
基本的にここまでの対応を行っていないと思いますが、検査で要求されるのが最後の
４．レジオネラ菌対策が行われているか
になります。
レジオネラ菌（Legionella bacteria）は、「水が滞留し、温かく、栄養がある環境」 で繁殖する細菌であり、菌が増殖している場合、肺炎、発熱、呼吸器疾患の原因にもなります。
そのため”The system should be inspected and cleaned on a regular basis not exceeding three months.”と記載されており、少なくとも3か月以内ごとに点検・清掃を実施していることが求められます。
陸上でも以下のようなラボに送るレジオネラ菌検査というものがあります。

しかし、船から検体を陸揚げしてラボに送ることも手続き上大変ですし、結果まで10日ほどかかるようです。
